Zhao Laogen, an herbalist, rescues a snow-white spiritual deer shot in the hind leg in the deep mountains. Deeply grateful, the deer repeatedly brings rare medicinal herbs and comes to his rescue in times of peril. The local tyrant Wang Dameng covets the spiritual deer and colludes with a corrupt magistrate to set fire and frame the Zhao family. The deer is severely poisoned while saving Zhao Laogen, but is miraculously reborn through heavenly light. An imperial inspector uncovers the truth and punishes the villains. The Zhao family opens an apothecary to aid their neighbors, and descendants build the Deer Gratitude Pavilion, passing down the tale of kindness and divine recompense through generations.
