The villagers doubt his soil-improving skills, Tieniu scoffs at him, and the village chief watches cautiously. Using lime to neutralize acidic soil and fish-scale pits to conserve water, he finds sweet potatoes to cultivate, yielding an incredible harvest. A county clerk covets his secret formula and tries to force him to hand it over. The village chief steps in with half of a matching jade pendant, revealing Chen Sanjin's identity as a descendant of Shennong and repelling the officials.
