When the ghost messengers come to hook souls, all they will see is the corpse that the staff turned into, unable to find his soul. Once the time for hooking souls has passed and they see the corpse rotting, they will treat him as a lonely wandering ghost and cross his name off the Book of Life and Death. Thus, he is considered to have become an immortal.
