During the Tianqi era, corruption ran rampant in the imperial court, and the common people suffered immensely. Bizarre demon spirits appeared in the mortal realm to wreak havoc, prompting the court to order the Brocade Guard (Embroidered Uniform Guard) to hunt them down. Hu Jinbo, a deeply trusted Guard commander, slayed demons valiantly, only to discover on one mission that a slain demon was actually Lord Xu, Commander of Canal Transport. Suspecting foul play, Hu Jinbo decided to secretly investigate the truth. During his probe, he realized that these supposed monsters were merely humans bewitched by poisonous parasites (Gu) or framed using Jianghu trickery and illusions. As the court's zealous demon-hunting campaign intensified, countless innocent officials and civilians were slaughtered in rivers of blood, leading Hu Jinbo to realize that the Brocade Guard might be massacring innocents.
