In the bitter winter of the 1970s, Sui Sui, a three-and-a-half-year-old girl from Xinghua Village, is abandoned in the snow at the village entrance by her mother, Lu Mei, who favors boys over girls. Lu Zheng, her uncle whom everyone avoids, braves the blizzard to rescue the frozen little girl and take her back to his dilapidated thatched hut.
