To raise money for his father's medical bills, Xiaofeng works for Xiaojie, only to be bullied and have his wages docked. While fishing, both catch a giant goldfish. Xiaojie ignores the warning from the spirit fish in his dream and cooks it, while Xiaofeng heeds his father's advice and releases his. Afterwards, disasters strike Xiaojie's household: he goes mad and bites people, his crops flood, livestock dies, and when his family's belongings are stolen, they frame Xiaofeng—yet any violence inflicted strangely rebounds upon themselves. Meanwhile, Xiaofeng digs up the treasure promised by the goldfish on the hillside, solving his mother's surgery fees. Ultimately, a doctor reveals the "retribution" was caused by hallucinations from eating a diseased fish, and the flooded fields were due to a breached levee. Once the real thief is caught, Xiaojie's family returns the docked wages and apologizes, and the two families reconcile to watch over each other.
