A new executive was parachuted into the company, who turned out to be my girlfriend's ex, Chen Xian. In front of all our colleagues, he accused me of taking a high salary while slacking off and being dead weight. Catching the year-end restructuring, Chen Xian abused his power to lay me off. Even my girlfriend, Su Liu, dumped me and threw herself right back into his arms. It wasn't until several submitted project approvals and seed funding applications were entirely rejected that Chen Xian finally panicked and begged me to come back.
