When the shop lease expires at the end of the month and the landlord takes it back without renewing, Lao Lu refuses Xiao Lu's suggestion to sell the anvil, hammers, and bellows as scrap iron. Insisting on lighting the forge one last time, he uses a thirty-year-old steel rail to forge a sickle for Lao Zhangtou. After hammering, quenching, and sharpening the blade, he charges only five yuan. Eventually, as the final fire dies out, Lao Lu places the anvil at the entrance of Xiao Lu's hardware store, hangs the six hammers on the wall, and sets the bellows in the corner. Every day, he sits at the storefront drinking tea, with the old iron and hammer marks still bearing witness to the past.
