The Prince of Zhenbei's estate is targeted by Prime Minister Qin Song, who seizes power from the Xiao family's father and sons. The frail Ninth Young Master, Xiao Chen, takes charge in the face of crisis, making a hundred-day pact to hold up his collapsing family. He purges the northern border army camps, cracks down on military corruption, and repels the invading Black Wolf Tribe, routing the steppe cavalry against overwhelming odds. To obtain evidence of Qin Song's crimes, Imperial Envoy Chen Xuan risks heading to the capital. Xiao Chen accepts the Dowager Consort's arrangement to marry Xiao Ling'er, the legitimate daughter of Prince Jing, using Prince Jing's influence to maneuver through court politics. Reporting to the imperial capital, Qin Song fabricates charges of treason at the Hall of Supreme Harmony, while Chen Xuan risks his life to present testimony. Xiao Chen slaps Qin Song in public, and under conclusive evidence, Qin Song is dismissed from office pending trial.
