In Li Village of Northeast China in the 1980s, the reborn Li Mu refuses to remain trapped in a poor, remote mountain hamlet. Relying on memories from his past life, he starts by catching fish in the river and collecting mountain goods. He befriends an Oroqen hunter to learn hunting skills, and uses his original squirrel fish dish to break into restaurant sales in the county seat. Facing obstruction and framing from relatives as well as doubts from neighbors, he takes the lead in digging ponds for aquaculture, rallying fellow villagers to forge a livelihood together. Amid the tide of reform and opening-up, he leads this impoverished mountain village step by step along the path to prosperity.
