Lin Zheng is the son of the village's veteran epitaph carver. Although studying away from home, his heart is set on carrying on his father's craft. Driven by his mother's severe illness and their impoverished family, he secretly accepts a job behind his father's back to recarve the epitaph of local tyrant Xu Batian for a substantial deposit. Xu Batian committed countless misdeeds in life, and his sons, Xu Laoda and Xu Lao'er, use threats and bribes to demand that Lin Zheng glorify their father on the headstone. However, ever since he took on this job, bizarre occurrences haunt Lin Zheng one after another: bloody handprints in the courtyard, blood on his carving chisel, endless nightmares, and his own name mysteriously appearing on the tombstone.
