Shen Mubei has been married into the Pei family for eight years, exhausting her Canal Gang dowry to support her husband Pei Jingheng's rise to power. On the day he is promoted to Minister of Works, he brings back a pregnant concubine from Yangzhou named Ruyan, forcing his first wife to yield the main courtyard and surrender household control. Without tears or fuss, Shen Mubei laughs lightly, cuts off all funds to the Pei family, divorces him with a deed of separation, and sets sail south to Jiangnan with immense wealth. Only then does Pei Jingheng realize that the Pei family's supposed century-old foundation was merely his first wife's dowry. Without Shen Mubei, the minister's manor is starved of food and coal, utterly disgraced, and Pei Jingheng is ultimately exiled to Lingnan.
