Shen Jichuan, a history PhD from Peking University, finds his soul transported into a poor family of the Great Xia dynasty. Armed with a thousand years of historical knowledge, he braves the perilous road of the imperial examinations. Topping five exams in a row, he rises from a scholar in a humble hut all the way into the Grand Secretariat, ruling with an iron hand to tame the rivers and grain transport, relieve famine and sweep away entrenched abuses. With ledgers as his blade and the law as his shield, he takes on the old faction at court head-on, advancing step by step on his path to becoming a powerful minister. When suspicion suddenly arises over army grain on the northern frontier, undercurrents sweep through court and country, and this chess game of the imperial court has only just begun.
