By day, I am a widow selling tofu in the eastern part of the city. By night, I secretly sneak into the prison. My two children are growing thinner by the day, and desperate to give them a proper meal, I have no choice but to agree to the matron's request: to care for Song Yan, the Jinyiwei commander who is about to be executed after the autumn harvest. Before I can even become pregnant, news arrives that Song Yan has been released without charge. Afraid that I will be killed to silence me, I take fifty taels of silver and flee south to Jiangnan with the children in the dead of night. But our boat is intercepted halfway. Having taken this official's jade pendant, where do you think you can go while carrying my child?
