Five-year-old A He lost her parents at an early age and was treated as a "jinx" by her uncle's family. Not only was she starved and underclothed, she was nearly sold away. On a stormy night, she fled into the deep mountains alone, eventually collapsing from exhaustion on the muddy trail. Fortunately, kind-hearted Uncle Lao Gen took her home. But Lao Gen's family was already struggling to make ends meet; how could they easily afford another mouth to feed? To avoid being cast out, little A He woke before dawn to do chores, dared not eat an extra bite, and was terrified that sleeping in a warm bed would bring misfortune upon the family. Yet gradually, she began to realize that this home was unlike anything she had known before.
