In the Kingdom of Avelorne, Marian Vail, a gifted young musician from Briar Glen, enters into a contract marriage with Duke Adrian Ravenscroft, head of the Royal Merchant Guild, to raise twenty thousand gold coins for her father's medical treatment. Returning to the guild as a mere maid, she still carries the stigma of having been falsely accused of stealing sheet music by Isolde Vane. Overcoming a series of traps set by her rival—a hidden earring, a staged fall, and a hired kidnapping—Marian reclaims the White Stone river trade route after a musical duel. Rising to become the guild's youngest chief musician, she restores her honor at the annual celebration, brings Isolde to justice, and finds true love with Adrian.
