Long ago, in the interior of Central Kalimantan, there was a prosperous village on the banks of a great river, surrounded by dense wilderness. At the heart of the forest lay a sacred area known as the forbidden forest, where an ancient giant tree called Karuhe grew. The tree was believed to be the pillar of the heavens and the dwelling place of a golden-bearded goat, the guardian spirit of the forest and messenger of Raning Hatala, the Sky God. One day, a famine struck, and the villagers' crops failed completely, plunging many families into despair. A young man named Kombeng, desperate for money, secretly took his large axe and entered the forbidden forest. He intended to cut down the Karuhe tree to sell its fragrant wood at a high price to foreign traders. When his axe first struck the trunk, thunder rumbled across the sky, and thick red sap flowed like blood.
