The tree was believed to be a pillar of the sky and the dwelling place of a golden-bearded goat, a guardian spirit of the forest sent by Ranying Hatalla Langit. One day, a famine struck, and the villagers' crops failed completely, plunging many families into despair. A young man named Kombeng, desperate for a way out, secretly took his large axe and headed into the forbidden forest. He intended to cut down the Karuhe Tree and sell its fragrant wood to foreign merchants for a high price. When his axe first struck the trunk, thunder rumbled across the sky, and thick red sap flowed like blood.
