The artillery fire at Suzhou's East Gate had barely ceased, and Zhang Shikang had just captured the rebel general when urgent reports arrived from Nanjing that 60,000 troops were bearing down on the city. Suppressing rebellions, defending cities, and saving commoners, he led a band of unconventional yet formidable fighters on a counterattack across the land. With Shizhu under siege, the White Rod Soldiers fought desperately in the mountains. He had to subdue Zheng Zhilong on the seas, battle entrenched aristocrats in court, and even left the Emperor exasperated yet amused by his relentless retorts. As new warships took to the waters and Jiangnan began to stabilize, the entire court fixated on a single question: faced with a subject whose merit eclipsed the realm, would the Emperor still dare to trust him?
