Su Wanning, the legitimate daughter of the richest family in Jiangnan, married into Prince Jing's estate with an immense dowry of 180,000 taels to become his primary consort. For three years, she worked tirelessly from dawn to dusk managing the household, keeping the estate in flawless order, and secretly using her own dowry to cover its annual deficit of 60,000 taels. Yet during an interrogation, her mother-in-law hurled the account books right at her face, cursing her as a squanderer; her husband watched with cold indifference, blind to everything she had sacrificed; and the concubine, Bai, undermined her at every turn, scheming to seize control of the household. In an instant of absolute heartbreak, she took off the twelve household keys before everyone and walked away completely.
