After his father and elder brother both die in a maritime disaster, Jiang Chao, a young fisherman from a fishing village, is left to depend on his sister-in-law, Jiang Yue. His uncle, Jiang Fuhai, covets the fishing boat and old family house purchased with the Jiang family's money. Using the excuse that the boat's registration is temporarily under his own name, he joins forces with his son, Jiang Zhipeng, to trick Jiang Chao into going out to sea. During a storm, they cut his safety rope and abandon him in the ocean.
