Chen Mingyuan, a former temporary geological survey worker, reads the survey report and realizes that underground caves and subterranean rivers run throughout Zhaojia Village, meaning the railway project will likely be cancelled. Ignoring the ridicule and ostracization from the villagers, he is the first to sign for the 3-million-yuan compensation and moves his family into the city for a secure life. Meanwhile, the village chief Zhao Dezhu leads the greedy villagers to hold out for a higher price and collectively refuse to sign, blindly awaiting higher payouts. In the end, the geological survey team withdraws and the railway is rerouted. The villagers lose the compensation, let their fields go to waste, and end up with nothing, while only Chen Mingyuan secures a stable, grounded life.
