In 1990s Tieling, coal miner Zhao Dayong fell in love at first sight with Li Xiuzhi, a girl selling cloth at the morning market. Clad in a bright red sweater, he struck up an awkward conversation, confessed clumsily under the ice lanterns by Hun River, and kept her warm through winter with a military coat. They married, had a daughter named Xiaoyu, and squeezed into a modest single-story house living a poor yet passionate life. But times changed.
