Li Shuyang transmigrates into a book as a poor young man in a northern Chinese village. His only initial wish is to give his wife, Wang Mengran, a better life. Through harvesting wheat, raising chickens and pigs, building an earthen kiln, and experimenting with mugwort incense coils, he gradually improves their dilapidated courtyard home. Facing a shortage of work points, misunderstandings from family members, and undercurrents of trouble in the village, he and his wife support each other through thick and thin. They also decide to send his younger sister, Li Mei, back to school. But strange noises begin coming from an empty tiled-roof house, and an even greater crisis is quietly approaching.

Li Shuyang entre dans l'univers d'un livre et devient un jeune homme pauvre dans un village rural du nord de la Chine. Son premier souhait est simplement d'offrir une vie meilleure à son épouse, Wang Mengran. En récoltant du blé, en élevant des poulets et des porcs, en construisant un four en terre et en expérimentant la fabrication d'encens en spirale à base d'armoise, il améliore peu à peu leur quotidien dans leur cour délabrée. Face au manque de points de travail, aux malentendus familiaux et aux tensions qui couvent dans le village, lui et sa femme se soutiennent mutuellement. Ils décident également de renvoyer sa petite sœur, Li Mei, à l'école. Mais des bruits étranges commencent à provenir d'une maison vide au toit de tuiles, tandis qu'une crise bien plus grave approche silencieusement.
