A Broken Handcart, Bringing a Family Home
Poor young Chen Yuanshan has just agreed to a marriage arrangement, only to find himself taking on not just Lin Qiuniang, a widow, but also her younger sister, who depends on her, 32 yuan in debt, and a broken handcart that's about to be repossessed. He repairs the cart and takes the sisters out to gather chestnuts, collect walnuts, and deliver fresh mushrooms. From being cheated on prices to making his way into the county town, he earns a living through honesty. When a mountain flood strikes, he would rather abandon an entire cartload of goods than leave someone behind. After he is injured, she takes over the burden and holds the family together. From running short of rice and living under a leaky roof to paying off their old debts and buying a new bed, every bit they save brings them not just money, but the comfort of having someone waiting for them to come home and someone who cares. A broken handcart brings a family back together.
