Half a Pencil, Lighting the Way Home
In the winter of 1998, nine-year-old Shen Zhiqiu and her six-year-old younger brother, Shen Xiaoman, lose their parents in a fatal workplace accident. Their uncle, Shen Dayong, takes their compensation money and throws them out of the family home. The siblings take shelter in an abandoned boiler room, surviving by collecting scrap paper and empty bottles. Determined to keep her little brother learning to read, Zhiqiu takes half of a pencil from the secondhand bookstall of Zhou Bonian, a retired teacher, and is publicly accused of stealing. But Zhou claims the pencil is cracked and unusable, and says he told the child to take it. Secretly following the siblings to their rundown shelter, he discovers Zhiqiu using discarded newspaper to teach her feverish little brother how to write the character for 'home'.

Durant l'hiver 1998, Shen Zhiqiu, neuf ans, et son petit frère Shen Xiaoman, six ans, perdent leurs parents dans un accident du travail. Leur oncle, Shen Dayong, détourne l'indemnisation et les chasse de la maison familiale. Les deux enfants trouvent refuge dans une chaufferie abandonnée et survivent en ramassant du papier usagé et des bouteilles vides. Pour permettre à son petit frère de continuer à apprendre à lire et à écrire, Zhiqiu prend un demi-crayon sur l'étal de livres d'occasion de Zhou Bonian, un ancien instituteur à la retraite. Mais les voisins la surprennent et l'accusent publiquement de vol. Zhou affirme alors que le crayon est fissuré, qu'il ne peut plus servir à écrire ni être vendu, et que c'est lui-même qui a autorisé l'enfant à le prendre. En suivant discrètement les deux enfants jusqu'à leur abri délabré, il découvre Zhiqiu en train d'utiliser de vieux journaux pour apprendre à son petit frère fiévreux à écrire le caractère signifiant « maison ».
