In the 1990s, Lin Hai, a young man from Sichuan, takes his childhood friend Zhao Dayong with him to Shanghai, borrowing money for the journey in search of a better life. Upon arriving in the city, they encounter traps at every turn and are repeatedly mistreated. Clever and hardworking, Lin Hai unexpectedly meets Su Xiaoman, a kind and capable local girl. The three join forces, starting with a small tofu pudding stall. Together, they stand up to local thugs and outsmart unscrupulous competitors.
