Huo Zhenting, le chef de clan de cinquante ans de la famille Huo, s'est déguisé en vieillard ruiné et s'est installé dans une vieille cité résidentielle pour retrouver Lin Wan, l'amante dont il avait été séparé de force il y a trente ans. À cette époque, Lin Wan a perdu son mari et subit l'oppression de sa belle-mère et de son beau-frère avec sa fille. Ils complotent pour s'emparer de la vieille maison et veulent même la forcer à se remarier pour éponger des dettes. Huo Zhenting l'aide en secret, démasquant de faux certificats, écrasant les prêts usuraires et luttant contre les représailles par incendie. Son identité révélée, les souffrances du passé refont surface et, après avoir traversé les tempêtes, les deux parviennent enfin à dénouer leurs rancoeurs de longue date, s'unissant pour protéger la mère et la fille et commencer une nouvelle vie.
