Relying on their grill, freezer, and seasoning cart, starting from exchanging a table of barbecue for life, barbecue skewers, dried meat, meat coupons, night market, chili smoke, and sowing discord—using modern barbecue skills and business brains, they step by step sustain one hundred thousand soldiers and civilians. Huo Xiao and Lao Zhou go from suspicion to entrusting their lives to each other. With grain exhausted and reinforcements cut off, the couple use a table of "Hongmen Barbecue" to outwit the barbarian king and his son with chili smoke arrays, fake intelligence, and interlocking fire pits, finally staking the life of an entire city to grill a desperate counterattack.

Gu Yan y Su Wan son un matrimonio que regenta un puesto en un mercado nocturno moderno. Una noche de tormenta, ambos viajan junto con su puesto a un campo de batalla de la antigüedad. La ciudad está llena de soldados heridos, llevan tres días sin provisiones y cien mil miembros de una tribu bárbara la mantienen sitiada. Con una parrilla, un congelador y un carro cargado de condimentos, comienzan intercambiando una mesa de carne asada por vidas humanas. Después amplían su actividad con brochetas, carne seca, vales de carne y un mercado nocturno, además de utilizar humo de chile picante y tácticas para sembrar discordia entre sus enemigos. Gracias a sus modernas habilidades para asar y a su inteligencia comercial, consiguen sostener poco a poco a cien mil soldados y habitantes. Huo Xiao y Lao Zhou pasan de desconfiar de ellos a confiarse mutuamente la vida.
