Toward the North, There Is Starlight: Returning Home
Yan Sichun, a provincial forestry engineer, has been trapped deep in the mountains of Suoyun'ao for ten whole years. In a dark, windowless woodshed, she secretly teaches her son and daughter to remember their names and identities. She hides her work ID badge in her daughter's shoe, while her ten-year-old son risks his life to arrange stones on a cliff in the shape of the Big Dipper. On a night of torrential rain and flash floods, the mother and children make a desperate escape. To help their mother get out and seek rescue, the siblings draw the entire village's pursuers away at the cost of their own safety. Yan Sichun narrowly survives her escape from the mountains and returns with the full force of the public security authorities. Justice will eventually dawn. After enduring an endless night, they will finally head north toward the brilliant starlight that belongs to them.

In un capanno per la legna completamente buio, insegna di nascosto ai suoi due figli a ricordare sempre i propri nomi e la propria vera identità. Nasconde il suo tesserino professionale nella suola della scarpa della figlia, mentre il figlio di dieci anni rischia la vita per disporre delle pietre su una scogliera formando il Grande Carro. In una notte di piogge torrenziali e inondazioni improvvise, madre e figli tentano una fuga disperata. Per permettere alla madre di scappare e chiedere aiuto, i due fratelli rischiano la vita per attirare lontano da lei tutti gli inseguitori del villaggio. Yan Sichun riesce a uscire dalle montagne per un soffio e ritorna accompagnata dalle forze della sicurezza pubblica. La giustizia prima o poi vedrà l'alba. Dopo aver resistito a una notte interminabile, finalmente si dirigeranno verso nord, incontro alla splendida luce delle stelle che appartiene a loro.
