Gu Ning, who lost both her parents, is regarded as having no heirs by her husband's family. Late one night, she overhears her mother-in-law, her husband, and his mistress faking pregnancy conspiring to seize her house, drive her out, and hire someone to defraud insurance. Gu Ning endures in silence and plans carefully. She voluntarily proposes transferring house ownership, uses fake receipts and mortgage pledges to hold them steady, secretly photographs the contract's bottom price, then enlists the help of Manager Feng, an old acquaintance of her late father, to lure Chen Jingui into signing a contract that traps him completely. The bank takes possession of the house, debt collectors break down the door, the Chen family collapses, the fake pregnancy is exposed in public, Chen Jingui is detained for assault by choking someone and commercial fraud. Gu Ning uses project payments to pay off the mortgage, and the house is released from lien and returns to her name. Una notte, sente per caso suocera, marito e l’amante che finge di essere incinta complottare per impossessarsi della sua casa, cacciarla via e assoldare qualcuno per frodare l’assicurazione. Gu Ning sopporta in silenzio e organizza un piano accurato. È lei stessa a proporre il passaggio di proprietà, usa ricevute false e l’ipoteca per tenerli buoni, fotografa di nascosto il prezzo del contratto e si avvale dell’aiuto del Direttore Feng, vecchio conoscente del padre defunto, per indurre Chen Jingui a firmare un contratto dal quale non potrà più liberarsi. La banca pignora la casa, i creditori irrompono, la famiglia Chen va in pezzi, la finta gravidanza viene svelata pubblicamente e Chen Jingui viene arrestato per aggressione —stritolamento— e frode commerciale. Gu Ning estingue l’ipoteca con i proventi di un progetto e la casa torna di nuovo a suo nome libera da vincoli. Madre e figlio della famiglia Chen rimangono mutilati e finiscono per dormire sotto i ponti, a contendersi il cibo con i cani randagi.
