Wanxing, a female ferry boatman, steers her black-awning boat into the night, braving curfew regulations. Accompanied by a red lantern and a bowl of hot ginger tea, she listens to the worries and innermost thoughts of all kinds of late travelers, repeatedly risking danger to ferry physicians for urgent medical aid. Enduring boat impoundments and harsh obstacles, her unwavering kindness wins a joint petition from the townsfolk, finally earning special permission from the magistrate for night ferries. With a single lantern upon the water, she illuminates the long dark nights of the ancient town.
