Qiao Yun, the legitimate daughter of the Prime Minister's estate, became foolish and stuttering after being plotted against in childhood. Her stepmother Lady Lin and her father, scheming to curry favor with the Crown Prince, forced her to replace her stepsister Qiao Wan and marry Prince Qi, Shen Jue, who was afflicted with deadly poison and renowned for his ferocious temper, all to ward off his bad luck. Shen Jue initially suspected she was a spy sent by the Qiao family and the Crown Prince, even using a rooster to stand in for himself at the wedding ceremony. Yet, he soon discovered that the sweet fragrance emanating from Qiao Yun could suppress the virulent poison in his veins. Simple-minded and fond of food, Qiao Yun had endured years of mistreatment in the Qiao residence. Shen Jue gradually softened toward her, shielding her, buying her fine clothes and delicious meals, and firmly backing her at every turn. At the imperial banquet, when Qiao Wan and the Crown Prince repeatedly made things difficult for Qiao Yun, Shen Jue powerfully resolved the troubles; and when Qiao Yun accompanied Shen Jue back to the Qiao residence for the bride's home visit, Shen Jue publicly exposed the Qiao family's misdeeds.
