Fisherman Chen Dahai rescues a white dragon from the sea. To repay his kindness, the dragon gives him a scale, attracting a boatful of large yellow croakers and curing his son's illness. Driven by greed, the couple repeatedly pluck its scales for pearls, eventually obtaining the supreme pearl of the deep sea. Unexpectedly, all the pearls turn to ash, plunging them into debt, and they abandon the critically injured dragon on a deserted island to die. The kind-hearted young fisherman A Xin rescues the dragon without asking for anything in return, and receives the supreme pearl to pay off his debts. The dragon makes a ten-year pact with him, ensuring his catches are bountiful, provided he never turns greedy. Chen Dahai and his wife are ultimately exposed by A Xin and forced to work to atone for their sins; the dragon returns to the sea, where virtue is rewarded and greed comes to nothing.
