Bai Ling, a white snake with a thousand years of cultivation and a benevolent heart, was brutally beaten in the back mountain by the butcher Zhang Biao and forced to surrender her inner alchemy bead. Learning from the treasure shopkeeper that the spiritual mark on her forehead was worth far more, Zhang Biao returned to cut it out alive. Bai Ling fought back desperately and bit him, but was slashed repeatedly to the brink of death and dumped into a thorn bush. Granny Wang, a lonely elderly herb gatherer, found the dying Bai Ling while going up the mountain. Ignoring the villagers' gossip, she took the snake home, applied her cherished herbs to its wounds, fed it thin rice porridge, and warmed it with her body on freezing nights, taking devoted care of it for half a month. Healed and shedding new scales, Bai Ling understood human nature and felt deep gratitude. By day she guarded the yard to drive away pests, and by night she cared for the elderly woman, as human and snake lived together side by side.
