After being used and abandoned by her urban boyfriend Chen Jiangang, Zhou Xiaomei, an educated youth in the countryside, returns to the city exhausted and starts from scratch as an ordinary salesclerk in a department store. Relying on no connections and fearing no rumors, she rises step by step to become a sales counter team leader through sheer hard work and dedication. Meanwhile, Lu Mingshen, the taciturn owner of the neighboring fabric stall set up on a blind date with her, turns out to be an old acquaintance from her middle school days—the very person who once pushed her away when his family fell on hard times. Even more unexpected is that his true identity is the head of the Lu Group, the city's largest business conglomerate.
