The Seventh Princess of the Merfolk, Niaoniao, was once a carefree daughter of the sea. However, a single remark from the human Emperor Zhao Xuan—wishing to see a mermaid pearl—brought catastrophic calamity upon her clan. To win his imperial father's favor, Crown Prince Zhao Lan and Crown Princess Gao Lingyi led soldiers to bathe the Hepu sea in blood, cutting open mermaid tails alive to extract their pearls. Niaoniao witnessed her mother pierced through the heart with a sword, and her clan slaughtered almost to extinction. With the aid of her benefactor Su Changming, Niaoniao endured the excruciating agony of severing her tail to take human form. Assuming the identity of the fisher-girl Lady Su, she entered the Crown Prince's manor to become a "pearl-nourisher" dedicated to nurturing pearls for the Emperor.
