Fisherwoman Xu Chunhe rescues Yue Niang, a clam spirit tangled in a fishing net. Yue Niang gifts her mature pearls, helping her pay off her boat debt and raise the school fee for her daughter A Sui to learn to read. But after seeing how valuable the pearls are, driven by life's anxieties, Xu Chunhe covets the unformed pearl fetus and does not hesitate to hurt Yue Niang. The forcibly taken pearl fetus loses its lustre as its spiritual energy drains, leaving her with huge debts. Moved by her daughter A Sui, Xu Chunhe awakens in remorse and returns Yue Niang to Moon Bay Spring. Afterwards she lets go of greed and works hard mending nets, and after a long time finally pays off all she owes. Mother and daughter return to an honest, peaceful life, while Yue Niang slowly heals her wounds at the bottom of the spring.
