As the thousandth birthday of the founding patriarch of the Yuantian Sect approaches, his four accomplished disciples have all blocked the sect's communications and refused to return to the mountain for the banquet and gifts. To get his birthday presents, the patriarch tricks five-and-a-half-year-old junior sister Yuan Zhaozhao—the only one unaware and owner of an "Unblemished Dao Heart"—into descending the mountain to catch her senior brothers. Before leaving, he hands her a stick figure drawn with pot soot as a portrait of her eldest senior brother. Following the three traits of "wearing a black robe, having a sullen deadpan face, and surrounded by shadowy shady creatures", Zhaozhao heads south and accidentally enters the forbidden Abyss of Ten Thousand Demons.
