Modern office worker Gao Ping unexpectedly time-travels to become the neglected Sixth Prince of the Great Xia dynasty, enfeoffed as the Prince of Zhenbei. In the imperial court, he directly faces the harassment and matchmaking games of the officials, cleverly using wisdom to resolve layer upon layer of crises. To guard the northern frontier, Gao Ping breaks deep-seated military abuses, borrows modern concepts to establish military regulations, personally trains soldiers, issues full military pay and family allowances, and builds an elite personal guard corps characterized by absolute obedience. Just as the new army is taking initial shape, an urgent border report arrives: an army of one hundred thousand from the Liao state launches a sudden attack on Zhenbei City, leaving the city in mortal peril. An imperial edict urges him to depart immediately for the border, and Gao Ping heads straight into danger accompanied by only a hundred personal guards.
