The story tells a true tale of how, after a victorious battle, a company was stationed in Zhuli Village. A young soldier named Xi Yazhi accidentally broke an earthenware jar while staying at the home of a Tibetan mother. To enforce the strict discipline of the military, he used his most cherished possession—a red sweater symbolizing revolutionary conviction and personal emotion—as compensation. Through a tightly linked series of events ("breaking the jar – compensating with the sweater – mending the sweater – returning silver dollars"), the film uses delicate visual language and exquisite performances to progressively portray the strict discipline, purity, and kindness of the soldier, as well as the simplicity, warmth, and high-minded wisdom of the Tibetan mother.
