Painter Shen Mohan accidentally enters Due Daoist Temple on a rainy night, picks up a speaking bronze mirror named Shuangjing, and is forced to enter three dreams of human hearts. A scholar asks for the Forget-Love Soup but ends up drinking his beloved's heart; three friends light a lamp with their hearts yet forget one another; an embroiderer who fell into a well for three years obsesses over saving her younger brother. In each dream a question is asked about what the human heart is, and he answers with reluctance to part, friendship, obsession, and letting go. At the end of the three dreams, the bronze mirror cracks; he is the reincarnation of the key that sealed the Heart-Devouring Beast three hundred years ago, and resealing it requires being trapped inside the mirror forever. He chooses to enter the mirror with a living human's heart to serve as its wall, setting Shuangjing free. A hundred years later, a new mirror guardian arrives, and Shuangjing is free. Three dreams question the heart; with the heart as a mirror, it reflects the human heart and redeems through letting go.
