In the Kingdom of Avelorne, Marian Vail, a gifted young musician from Briar Glen, enters into a contract marriage with Duke Adrian Ravenscroft, leader of the Royal Merchant Guild, to raise twenty thousand gold coins for her father's medical treatment. She returns to the Merchant Guild as a cleaner, bearing the stigma of being falsely accused of stealing sheet music by Isolde Vane. After surviving a series of devious schemes—from a planted earring and staged injuries to an orchestrated abduction—Marian reclaims the White Stone River Trade Route through a musical duel. She goes on to become the youngest Chief Musician in the Merchant Guild, clears her name at the annual celebration, brings Isolde to justice, and ultimately finds true love with Adrian.
