A modern ordinary man travels through time to become Li Yan, a prince of the Tang Dynasty stranded among commoners. Knowing full well the cruelty of the succession struggle, he only wishes to live as a wealthy gentleman. Using modern knowledge, he brews distilled liquor and makes perfume to amass wealth. On the surface, he is nonchalant and stays aloof, but secretly aligns with King of Wu Li Ke and befriends descendants of military generals like Cheng Chuliang for self-protection. Empress Zhangsun and Crown Prince Li Chengqian see him as a major threat and plant Wu Meiniang and Xu Hui to spy on him, but the Crown Prince's repeated provocations are countered by Li Yan each time. To aid the Crown Prince, Hou Junji sets a trap by bringing a fake prince and frames Li Yan with a rigged blood test, throwing him into the imperial prison. Li Yan exposes the fraud, clears his name, Hou Junji is brought to justice, and Li Yan restores his identity, continuing to stand firm in the imperial court.
