Lu Chen, an herb-gathering youth from Qingshi Village, was deemed by the world to possess no spiritual roots. When the Xuanxiao Sect forcibly seized the village's spiritual vein, he stumbled into the ancestral shrine's underground palace and awakened the ancient Bone-Illuminating Lantern, only to discover he was not devoid of spiritual roots, but rather possessed a skeletal foundation that heaven and earth dared not measure. Renewing the Heavenly Covenant and awakening the Bone-Illuminating Spiritual Pupils, he enters the Seven Sects Examination and unravels the long-buried secrets of eighteen years ago. It turns out the Lock-Heaven Well is not an immortal gate of ascension, but a celestial fissure devouring spiritual energy. As Sect Master Shen Wuji schemes to ascend through it, Lu Chen's father sacrifices himself to seal the calamity beneath. Bearing the name of the Defiant Covenant, Lu Chen confronts the seven great immortal sects, severs karmic ties with the complete Bone-Illuminating Lantern, ends the turmoil of the Lock-Heaven Well, and lets go of the heaven-bestowed power.
