Bai Chuyang, a 21-year-old youth from Foshan obsessed with kung fu and video games, unexpectedly travels back in time to Foshan in the late Qing and early Republic era. He meets the chivalrous heroine Jiumei and the Western-educated Thirteenth Aunt, living under the same roof. Although he can summon master game fighters, he himself remains mediocre. Mentored by Jiumei, he grows in skill and joins an attempt to assassinate Japanese military officer Yamai Mokuro. When it fails and Jiumei is captured, he risks his life to find medicine and rescue her, greatly improving his martial arts. Later, when Green Gang leader Hei Bao kidnaps Thirteenth Aunt, Bai Chuyang saves her with the help of Choy Li Fut master Chen Zhong and becomes Chen's disciple. Ultimately joining forces with everyone to drive back the Japanese invaders, he becomes a true hero of Foshan. Awakening from the dream, he finds modern Foshan caught in a martial arts craze, as Jiumei and Thirteenth Aunt run toward him.
