In Jiangzhou, Shanxi, Zhang Yichui, a stuttering young man, endured endless ridicule. Ten years ago, his drummer father, Zhang Yuanchao, fell and died with grievance during a performance for veteran Red Army soldiers, and his mother was driven to drown herself in the river. The Chen family of the same village repeatedly used this to bully the Zhang family, and the thug Chen Ergou publicly humiliated the father and son as cowards. Liu Wanxing, the father's junior fellow apprentice, stepped in to protect Yichui. Yichui desperately begged to learn drumming from him. After frantically beating a drum to pieces and roaring out to clear his father's name, he moved Liu Wanxing to accept him. From then on, every night at the fourth watch, he practiced Jiangzhou drumming hard on the banks of the Yellow River. Facing relentless provocations, he raised his drumsticks to fight back, broke through self-doubt and rumors, revived his family's drumming art, and found himself amid the ever-growing beats.
