Gao Yi, Prince of Hejian of the Great Yong Dynasty, takes in Zhang Heng, a time traveler, as his adoptive sister. He is deeply in love with her but dares not speak of it, fearing she would become a weakness exploited by his political enemies. Under the guise of an older brother, he conceals all his affection, while she questions him relentlessly as he pulls away. When Gao Yi is falsely imprisoned for treason, Zhang Heng storms the Court of Judicial Review alone, declaring in court, "The one by his side day and night was me." Although she clears his name, they cannot escape imperial oppression and drink poisoned wine together. After returning to modern times, Zhang Heng encounters Gao Yi's modern counterpart, and the lovers finally recognize each other and embrace.
