In a year of severe drought, sixty-five-year-old farmer Xu Qingshan waters a strange seed with the last half ladle of water in his home. To his surprise, the seed sprouts rapidly into a gigantic tree reaching into the clouds. A celestial vine drops down, and a green rush cushion carries him high into the sea of clouds, where a phoenix turns into a lady in red and gives him a red gourd carved with a fire phoenix. A little phoenix inside the gourd can talk and take form, barging into the lives of Xu Qingshan and his wife Guizhi. Finding springs, saving crops, rescuing villagers, and fighting floods—through one trial after another, humans and phoenix unite, unfolding a legendary folk tale.
