Youfu, a rural young man working far away all year round, sends all his hard-earned money back home, looking forward to living a steady life with his wife Xiaolian. When he unexpectedly returns home early, he stumbles upon the affair between Xiaolian and Daqing, an idle man from the same village. Cold-hearted Xiaolian swindles all their family savings—even running off with the wages Youfu borrowed for his fellow workers—and leaves with Daqing. Drowning his sorrow in alcohol, Youfu is saved when his first love, Chunxi, returns in time, uses her own savings to help him clear his debts, and stands by him as he gets back on his feet. Youfu returns to work at the construction site, achieves growing success in his career, and eventually finds true happiness with Chunxi. Meanwhile, Xiaolian is scammed out of all her money by Daqing and abandoned, ending up destitute with no one to turn to, reaping what she sowed.
